Frequently asked questions

Can I file the final return electronically?

No, the final return with Form 8854 must be mailed to the IRS. The IRS does not currently support electronic filing for dual-status returns or Form 8854.

When should I file my final return?

You should file during the regular tax season for the year in which you expatriated. For most people abroad, this means by June 15 of the following year. Extensions may be available.

Will I get a confirmation from the IRS after filing?

No official confirmation is sent. We recommend sending the return via a trackable mail service and keeping a copy of the return and mailing receipt for your records.

What if I’m behind on previous years’ tax filings?

You’ll need to catch up before filing your final return. We offer a Renunciation Package specifically designed to bring you into compliance so you can renounce your U.S. citizenship confidently and correctly. Let us know, and we’ll guide you through the entire process.
