Frequently asked questions
Is this a tax return?
No. Form 3520 is an informational form, not a tax return. However, it must be filed separately from your Form 1040 and is usually sent to a different IRS address.
Can you also prepare Form 3520-A if needed?
Yes. If you’re considered the owner of a foreign trust, you may also need to file Form 3520-A. We can prepare both forms as part of Form 3520 preparation free of charge.
Do I need to report multiple gifts separately?
No. You must report all gifts from the same foreign person or related parties in aggregate if the total exceeds the filing threshold during the year.
How will I know what information you need from me?
Once you sign up, we’ll provide a clear checklist of the documents and details required—including gift amounts, dates received, and any documentation you may have from the sender or trust.
Will you handle the filing for me?
Yes. Whenever possible, we e-file Form 3520 along with your tax return. If electronic filing isn’t allowed based on your specific situation or the IRS’s current system, we will prepare a complete, signed-ready package and give you clear mailing instructions. If needed, we can also assist with mailing it on your behalf.
